RSC’s playwright in residence Tarell Alvin McCraney's play American Trade ran at London's Hampstead Theatre (2nd June - 18th June). BLUD! was invited to press night by the Royal Shakespeare company to review the production. Full review after jump:
American Trade put simply was a let down. The plot of an American rent boy given an opportunity to leave the States to run a modelling division in his English Aunt's London company only to fail, was poorly directed.
What could have been a really deep introspective into the inner workings of a hustler in two contexts with strong acting chops instead came off like a gumbo of a shallow and camp plot on drugs. Then there were the racial jokes.
The visuals made the plot seem disjoined and the sub-storylines of the supporting cast made it confusing to remember who the lead character was.
Simply put a Jack of all trades but a master of nothing.
